The year 1994 was the time Tonya gained notoriety because her principal opponent Nancy Kerrigan mysteriously was assaulted just prior to the "National Championship". She used this popularity and fame so effectively that she changed the landscape of women's skating. Her story as well as her accomplishments were incorporated into numerous studies and, in 2017, an autobiography titled "I Tonya' came out.
